His obsession isn't feature-count, it's friction: the calculated distance between a musician's intent and the software's response. With Bitwig Studio 6, that obsession manifests as an uncompromising rebuild of the timeline itself — clips that recognize their own duplicates, automation that behaves like an instrument, and a key signature system that refuses to be reduced to a dropdown menu.

Linnenbank occupies a rare dual position inside Bitwig: he is both a Product Manager shaping the software's core architecture and the lead technical writer responsible for the manual that explains it back to the world. That 360-degree vantage — reinforced by time teaching at Berklee and building show-control systems like MainBrain for Broadway productions — has shaped a design philosophy where stability and musicality are not competing priorities but the same priority. He is also an active musician in his own right, releasing albums including Luster and The Problem is Last Year. We sat down with Dave to dissect the guiding logic behind Bitwig Studio 6, the discipline of writing documentation for a moving target, and why the best fixes sometimes arrive nowhere near a computer.

[01] Frequencies: Bitwig Studio 6 has just arrived with major features like Clip Aliases and an overhauled automation system. From your perspective as a Product Manager, what was the "guiding light" or the core philosophy behind the development of version 6?

Well, we had a handful of "timeline" features that we had tried out and were excited about. And once you start changing the fundamentals of the software (like how clips and tracks work), it's better to do it all at once.

To me, each of the v6 features have a simple musical implication: Music works in blocks (clip aliases). Music's curves can be as important as the notes (automation clips, and new editing workflows). Coloring lines let you control being in and out (key signature). Even the editor changes share the sense of zooming in for the details so you can zoom out and keep your eye on the big picture.

[02] Frequencies: You've been the voice behind the Bitwig manual since the beginning. How does the process of explaining a feature to a user influence the way that feature is actually designed during development?

Yes indeed. At times I have also found myself sprinkling in examples of "why" you might want to use a feature or device. Strictly speaking, that isn't general manual content. But making yourself find musical applications of a feature helps both the design and ensure we are making something useful.

[03] Frequencies: Clip Aliases are a game-changer for arrangement. For a producer who is used to a traditional "copy-paste" workflow, how do you see this feature changing their creative momentum or how they think about song structure?

I think this is the best kind of feature in that you choose when to use it (or not). So if you are thinking in "blocks" that come back, you can drag a unique copy or a linked alias. But you can always copy-paste as usual, and then at any time choose to Merge Duplicate Patterns. This will find any truly identical patterns on that track and make them aliases, which could be handy at a different stage of your process.

[04] Frequencies: Version 6 brings Automation Clips and "Spread" (randomization) to automation points. Do you view automation in Bitwig as a utility for mixing, or has it evolved into a form of synthesis in its own right?

Automation is not an audio signal, but music without automation tends to be static and flat. When you think about it, notes are only timing (and sometimes control) signals. So yes, elevating automation makes sense for most any music, whether you are deep in sound design or just want well-shaped music.

[05] Frequencies: With your background teaching at Berklee and your work on systems like "MainBrain" for Broadway, how do those high-stakes, real-world performance environments influence the "stability-first" features we see in Bitwig (like the new project backup safety features)?

The "version" backup feature came more from a place of user convenience. If we know you made this project in a different version of Bitwig, we just lay off a copy on file open. Every software beta in human history yells SAVE COPIES!, so now we do. That helps on Broadway and for work done on the couch.

[06] Frequencies: Bitwig is often praised for "The Grid" and its modular heart. For an artist who feels intimidated by modular synthesis, what is the best "entry point" in Bitwig 6 to start experimenting with modular logic without getting lost in the wires?

No matter what plug-in or device you are using, modulators are always available. So with an Organ device loaded, I can click plus on the left, add our Steps sequencer, and directly assign modulation to various drawbars. It's so central to Bitwig Studio that you don't even notice — until you want an envelope on your distortion, or an LFO on your track's panning, or…

[07] Frequencies: You are an active musician yourself (with albums like Luster and The Problem is Last Year). When you sit down to make your own music, do you find yourself "stress-testing" new Bitwig features, or do you have to switch off the "Product Manager" brain to stay in the creative flow?

Haha, well, let's call it compartmentalization. When I'm working on music, I won't even touch a pre-release version of the software. It's too easy to only "see the seams" and start filing/fixing bugs. So I try to ignore the work-side of things when sitting at the desk.

But I also realized a while ago that working on music makes me better at my job. So spending that user time is really valuable for finding both friction in the process and new ideas. And separately — a large number of tutorials came from me trying to solve a musical problem on an actual track. All roads, I suppose.

[08] Frequencies: Project-wide Key Signatures are a long-requested feature. Beyond just showing notes on a grid, how does this new "scale awareness" interact with Bitwig's modulators and Note FX to help composers who might not have a deep background in music theory?

Our approach to devices and controls actually influenced the key signature feature. In music theory and in a lot of DAWs, key signature is treated as a block: "C Major" versus "E♭ Harmonic Minor". But once you imagine using a controller, it has to be "F" on one knob and "Phrygian" on another.

So yes, a note FX that changes pitch can help you a lot when it knows the key. And yes, a button modulator that shifts the whole project from major to minor can make straight something complex, whether playing with arpeggiators or generating noodles. But even if you have a master's in composition, it can be awfully nice to select a handful of notes and nudge them up or down by scale steps.

[09] Frequencies: The audio industry is moving fast—from AI integration to immersive audio. Without giving away the roadmap, what is a "problem" in modern music production that you are personally obsessed with solving right now?

I'm sad you don't want the roadmap. [Laughs] But seriously, the coin of the realm for a DAW is offering the right tool at the right moment. So I tend to stare at things that are already possible and try to put them within easier reach. That could mean streamlining your grunt work, and sometimes it's building on our unique features by cutting new musical paths for you. Often the oldest problems are the most rewarding to improve.

[10] Frequencies: Our blog focuses on the intersection of gear, software, and creativity. For the aspiring developer or producer reading this, what is one habit or area of study (outside of music) that has most improved your ability to design musical systems?

Nothing interesting happens in the computer. That's true whether you are looking for new sound ideas, trying to write a bridge, or finishing a new feature. Maybe read a book instead, or stare at a tree. They take you further.

And for people who want to do product work, I will say it helps considerably to 1) know a bunch of whip-smart developers, and 2) stock your drawer with their favorite snacks.
