The Cost of a Menu
Ask a producer to describe their ideal instrument and most will reach for words like "expressive" or "warm." Few will say "fast." But speed — specifically, the distance between an idea and the sound it becomes — might be the single most under-discussed variable in instrument design. And it's decided almost entirely by one thing: whether a parameter has its own dedicated control, or whether it's waiting behind a menu.
The Translation Step
A synth with one knob per function is a direct line. You hear something in your head, your hand moves, the sound changes. No intermediate step. The same matrix buried in a scrolling list of "MOD SOURCE 1 → DEST A, DEST B, DEST C" is equally powerful and far slower to actually use, because now the complexity requires memory instead of sight. Good hardware design doesn't reduce what an instrument can do. It keeps everything it can do in view.

Designing for the Fragile Moment
The practical takeaway isn't "buy only hardware with knobs." It's a question worth asking about anything in a signal chain, hardware or software: does this tool ask me to remember where something lives, or does it show me? A plugin with every parameter visible on one screen behaves like a knob-per-function synth, even without a single physical control. A hardware unit with a deep, paged menu behaves like the worst kind of software, even with knobs on the front panel. The distinction was never really about hardware versus software. It's about whether the instrument respects how fragile a good idea actually is.
