The Half-Step That Makes a Pad Feel Wrong

Ask a producer to make something sound "dark" and they'll reach for a minor key almost every time. It's not wrong, exactly — minor intervals do read as sadder than major ones, reliably, across genres. But sad isn't the same feeling as wrong, and a lot of tracks that are going for tension end up merely gloomy instead, because minor key is doing all the work alone.
Genuine unease usually comes from a much smaller move — a few cents of deliberate detune between voices, not the key signature.

Beating Is a Different Signal Than Mode
When two voices sit a few cents apart in pitch — not a semitone, a handful of cents, barely a smudge — the ear doesn't hear two notes anymore. It hears one note that won't sit still. That slow, uneven pulse is called beating, and it's a physical property of overlapping sound waves, not a musical scale choice. It reads as instability before the listener has consciously identified a single pitch.
This is why a plain minor chord can still sound comfortable, even pretty, while a chord with one voice detuned a few cents off unison reads as actively unsettled.
Where to Put It
Detuning every voice in a pad equally just makes the whole thing sound fatter — that's the standard unison-detune trick, and it's warm, not tense. The unease comes from asymmetry: one voice pulled slightly sharp, the rest left alone, or a slow LFO on a single oscillator's pitch that the other voices don't share. The tension lives in the disagreement between voices, not in how far any one of them has drifted.
Small amounts do more than large ones. Anything past about 15-20 cents starts reading as "out of tune" in an obvious, almost comedic way — the brain files it as a mistake rather than a choice.

It Compounds With Register
The same few cents of detune reads very differently depending on where it sits. High up, in a lead or a bell, slight detuning mostly adds shimmer. Low and slow — a sustained pad, a drone, something with room to breathe — is where the effect does its real work, because the beating has time to be heard as a pulse rather than a flicker.
A slow, narrow resonant filter sweep across a detuned pad adds a second layer of instability on top of the pitch instability, and the two together read as something closer to a threat than a mood.
The Actual Move
Take a pad with two or three stacked voices. Leave the root voice untouched. Pull one supporting voice 4-8 cents sharp, permanently — not modulated, just fixed slightly off. Listen at a sustained note, low register, no other processing. The beating should be audible but not obviously "out of tune."
Add a slow resonant low-pass sweep, a few seconds per cycle, and the two instabilities layer into something that reads as genuinely wrong rather than just moody. The mode sets the mood. The detune is what makes it feel dangerous.
